Our Learning and Support Teacher (LaST) at Wyee PS, this term, is Mrs Gomez.
There is a common misconception that the LaST only supports students with learning difficulties.
Mrs Gomez's job is to work closely with the classroom teachers, to identify the needs of individual students. These needs might be extension work, beyond a student's grade level or to support students achieve grade level outcomes. Supporting students to achieve at grade level does not necessarily mean that students are struggling, they may have been away on the day an outcome was taught, or they need one session with a small group to "tick the box".
Needs might also be social, cultural or linguistics.
The LaST also works within school priorities. This year, this will entail working strongly in the literacy field and being guided by PLAT data. PLAT (Powerful Learning Accountable Teaching) will be further explained as the term progresses.
For some programs run by the LaST, families will receive a letter informing them of what the program entails. With the fluid nature of the LaST's timetable and regular changes in students participating, sometimes written communication is not possible. If you ever have any queries about your child's attendance at sessions with Mrs Gomez, please feel free to discuss the programs that are being presented, with her.
